The Telstra TV 2 was the second iteration in Telstra’s newest foray into set top boxes. It’s big new feature was including Free To Air TV (also known as Live TV or terrestrial TV in the box).
My role on the project was as one of the designers working on the live TV experience and content-led UI. Note that the remote itself is quite simplistic, and doesn’t have channel (program) up/down or volume buttons but did include a Live TV button and a TV Guide button.

Prototypes
Here you can see a few parts of the prototype that I made using Zing Studio, an advanced prototyping tool. The prototype shows the interaction and motion design I made for live TV and the TV Guide. We went through several iterations of the mini EPG – the guide that shows while the channel is playing. This tool allowed us to play with the different sizing and spacing elements, while having an actual video in the background.
The data was sourced from an old EPG file, and the screen was controlled by a bluetooth remote that acted as a proxy for keypresses.
Testimonials
Through the process, I received many kudos from my peers in the company for putting these prototypes together and working as part of a tight-knit design crew to get the device out to market on time.
Outcome
Outside of the praise and the kudos I got for my brillant interaction design and prototyping efforts, the box went on to be shipped in the millions to households all around Australia. I can proudly say that I designed an entirely new way of browsing live TV for millions of customers around the nation.
